Foundation Safety and Rescue Training

“The objective of this training course is to introduce simple and safe skills that can provide the tools to problem solve simple, but common, paddling scenarios in flat/sheltered water regardless of the craft.” – British Canoeing

You will learn how to self rescue and rescue others from multiple crafts and gain confidence working on the Water.

What will this allow me to do?

Your FSRT allows you to rescue both yourself and other paddlers efficiently and confidently in sheltered water regardless of the craft you are paddling. . The skills that you will learn, form the foundations for safety and rescue throughout all the British Canoeing awards.

Where will I be doing it?

The majority of our water sports awards will be based in the Ardeche region of France. The limestone gorges and picturesque lakes are the perfect playground to learn new skills in a warmer climate.

What does this entail?

The first of the watersports awards will see you jump right in, getting hands on with different methods of righting capsized crafts and helping paddlers re-enter their boat from the water. You will also learn various ways to rescue yourself should you take an unexpected dip when working on the water.

Canoe Award

“Your Canoe Award endorses your skill, judgment and decision making when journeying. You will be confident in planning and undertaking canoe journeys on the water in winds up to and including force 3 taking place on grade 1 rivers with simple eddy lines.” – British Canoeing

What will this allow me to do?

This course is a personal skills award that validates your ability to control a candian canoe on flat and slow moving water.

Where will I be doing it?

The majority of our water sports awards will be based in the Ardeche region of France. The limestone gorges and picturesque lakes are the perfect playground to learn new skills in a warmer climate.

What does this entail?

Throughout this course you will be assessed on your fundamental canoeing strokes and ability to control the boat on flat and slow moving water. You will be introduced to traditional canoeing skills, such as poling, sailing and tracking and lining, as well as ensuring your rescue skills are up to scratch.

White Water Kayak Award

Kayak Ardeche

“Your White Water Award endorses your skill, judgment and decision making to ensure a successful day on rivers up to grade 2.” – British Canoeing

What will this allow me to do?

This course is a personal skills award that validates your ability to control a white water kayak on flat and slow moving water, up to grade 2.

Where will I be doing it?

The majority of our water sports awards will be based in the Ardeche region of France. The limestone gorges and picturesque lakes are the perfect playground to learn new skills in a warmer climate.

What does this entail?

Throughout this course you will be assessed on your ability to implement foundational kayaking strokes whilst controlling a kayak on grade 2 rapids. You will be asked to demonstrate a series of skills, including ferry gliding, eddy hopping and the all important eskimo roll!

White Water Safety and Rescue

“It aims to teach simple and practical safety and rescue skills that can be applied appropriately to a moderate white water environment.” – British Canoeing.

What will this allow me to do?

This training course is the big brother of the FSRT. Working on fast moving white water, you will learn and practise various bank and water based rescue techniques. Prepare to get wet as you swim down rapids, recover stranded boats and practise casualty extraction in a dynamic and fast paced environment.

The majority of our water sports awards will be based in the Ardeche region of France. The limestone gorges and picturesque lakes are the perfect playground to learn new skills in a warmer climate.

What does this entail?

Core Coach Training

“The two day Core Coach Training is generic and open to all paddlesport coaches at this level. On this practical based course, you will explore different approaches to coaching, understanding and enabling learning, and some core coaching skills. You will also be supported in evolving your personal coaching development plan to enable you to take your learning into practice after the course.” – British Canoeing

What will this allow me to do?

This module will give you an understanding of how people learn, how to structure and plan your sessions and deliver skills based coaching to budding students. The contents of this course can be applied to a multitude of sports and is your first introduction to the world of coaching. This is a prerequisite of any other British Canoeing coach award.

What does this entail?

Anaward that, although provided in a watersports context, includes valuable coaching methods that can be transferred to a number of different sports. In a multitude of different crafts, you will explore different approaches to coaching, understanding and enabling learning, and other core coaching skills.

Sheltered Water Canoe and Kayak Coach Training

“If you’re looking to coach canoeing and kayaking on sheltered water, this two day training focuses on how to coach the technical and tactical skills for canoe and/or kayak paddlers in a sheltered water environment. The course will help you plan and deliver safe, enjoyable, progressive coaching sessions and you’ll explore specifics to help you coach some typical learners relevant to you and the sheltered water environment.” – British Canoeing. Core coach module is a prerequisite.

What will this allow me to do?

Once you have learnt the fundamentals of coaching on the core coach module, this training course will enable you to apply these principles specifically to kayak and canoe. It will teach you various methods and approaches that can be used to teach skills and strokes to beginners. Once you have completed the training, you will need to take a consolidation period to go away and put what you’ve learnt into practise, before going for assessment.

Where will I be doing it?

The majority of our water sports awards will be based in the Ardeche region of France. The limestone gorges and picturesque lakes are the perfect playground to learn new skills in a warmer climate.

What does this entail?

Throughout this course you will be asked to apply the methods you learnt in the core coaching module to both kayak and canoe scenarios. You will learn how to plan and create progressive sessions whilst ensuring that each participant’s needs and abilities are met. Upon completion, you will need to undertake a consolidation period and gain experience delivering sessions, before going forward for assessment.

White Water Kayak Leader Training

“If you’re looking to lead kayakers on moderate white water, this two day training focuses on personal skills and leadership. This emphasises the application of strokes to achieve suitable techniques and boat control in real situations and covers personal paddling skills, rescue skills, safety, leadership and group skills and the theory.” – British Canoeing.

What will this allow me to do?

This is a Leadership award that trains you in how to safely and efficiently lead kayak journeys on moderate white water.

Where will I be doing it?

The majority of our water sports awards will be based in the Ardeche region of France. The limestone gorges and picturesque lakes are the perfect playground to learn new skills in a warmer climate.

What does this entail?

By now you will be able to identify river features, spot hazard and identify safe and appropriate lines down rapids. Surfing waves, ferry gliding and eddy hopping are some of the personal skills that you will practise. Upon completion of the training, you will be expected to go away and further your experience in this environment and consolidate what you have learnt before going forward for assessment.

White Water Kayak Leader Assessment

“To become a White Water Kayak Leader, you will need to successfully complete a two day, mainly practical assessment which takes place on sections of moderate white water, which must include suitable river journeys. This will include assessment of your personal paddling skills, rescue skills, safety, leadership and group skills and the theory.” – British Canoeing.

This is a Leadership award that demonstrates you are able to safely and efficiently lead kayak journeys on moderate white water.

What does this entail?

A follow on form the training course, this assessment will cement your ability in leading journeys on moderate white water. By now you will be able to identify river features, spot hazard and identify safe and appropriate lines down rapids. Surfing waves, ferry gliding and eddy hopping are some of the personal skills that you will be asked to demonstrate with confidence.

Canoe Leader Training

“If you’re looking to lead canoeists on moderate white water and moderate inland water, this two day training focuses on personal skills and leadership. This emphasises the application of strokes to achieve suitable techniques and boat control in real situations and covers personal paddling skills, rescue skills, safety, leadership and group skills and the theory.” – British Canoeing.

What will this allow me to do?

This is training for a Leadership award that will enable you to safely lead canoe journeys on both flat and moving water.

Where will I be doing it?

The majority of our water sports awards will be based in the Ardeche region of France. The limestone gorges and picturesque lakes are the perfect playground to learn new skills in a warmer climate.

What does this entail?

You will revisit traditional canoeing techniques, such as sailing, poleing, tracking and lining, as well as learning how to read the environment and use factors such as the weather to assist you on your way. You will also become accustomed to the principles of facilitating a journey and learn various methods to ensure that you and the group are safe at all times. On completion of the training, you will undertake a consolidation period before going forward for assessment.

Canoe Leader Assessment

“To become a Canoe Leader, you will need to successfully complete a two day, mainly practical assessment. This will include assessment of your personal paddling skills, rescue skills, safety, leadership and group skills and the theory. In both open water and moving water environments, Canoe Leaders are expected to demonstrate appropriate paddling ability to fulfil their leadership role.” – British Canoeing.

What will this allow me to do?

This is a Leadership award that will enable you to safely lead canoe journeys on both flat and moving water.

Where will I be doing it?

What does this entail?

Following your training and consolidation period, you will be assessed on your personal skill level and ability to safely lead beginners, on a journey, in appropriate environments. You will be asked to demonstrate these skills on both flat and moving water.

SRA Raft Guide Level 1/British Canoeing Raft Guide (Grade 2/3)

A hands on, entry level course to Raft Guiding. It will give you the skills and understanding to operate a raft on water up to grade 3 and provide clients with a fun and safe journey on the river.

Upon completion, you will be able to assist commercial rafts on river trips, up to grade 2, before going forward to be signed off on bigger rivers.

What does this entail?

A course that is guaranteed to have you hooked. By now you will have a deeper understanding of the way rivers work and the features that make up rapids. Try your hand at a new craft that makes white water more accessible to the masses and bounce, flip and surf your way down them. This course teaches you the fundamentals of moving a larger craft around the river and using features to help. All whilst providing a fun and safe experience to the participants.
